A small photo report of the critters shot with the new Tokina AT-X Pro 100\2.8 macro lens.

At first I entertained myself with spiders and cockroaches, only sometimes I found something more exotic, but closer to winter mantises came.... Oooh they are just incredibly photogenic 🙂 When you crawl around him with a camera he turns his head in your direction and pulls his paws, like take me in your arms, meow 🙂 I haven't been able to catch a big cricket on a big camera yet, and the phone at night is rubbish.

Chinese Lantern Festival

For several years now, every year on Chinese Lunar New Year, Oakland has hosted a Chinese Lantern Festival. Although I would call these glowing sculptures 🙂 for they are very large for flashlights. Several hundred glowing figurines were collected in Oakland's Domein Park (more than 800 according to official records). Some were funny, some were more or less gaunt 🙂 Besides the lanterns, the trees lit up with different colors looked cool.

I don't know how to translate water garden, something like a garden with a pond... A place with the Maori name Ngatea has a very famous garden. It is known not only for the fact that there is a lot of vegetation, but also for the unbridled sense of humor of its owners, which spills out in unexpected installations and compositions. It rained very luckily while fording and produced lots of colors with droplets.

On New Year's Eve I unexpectedly got a real macro lens - Tokina Macro 100mm\2.8 and decided to go to the botanical garden to take pictures, because I had been there several times, but without a camera. In practice, macro turned out to be not so easy and about 70% of the footage flew into the trash because of shakiness. The shutter speed of 1\320 was sometimes not enough because the photographer wobbles, the flower wobbles, the bumblebee moves... aaaaaaah. In general, as experienced people say, a stabelizer on macro lenses is useless because the world around you is constantly moving. Below are 40 shots of what didn't move much.

The vegetable garden around the house is planted with flowers and various ornamental bushes instead of tomatoes and radishes. All this farm, despite the last days of winter is blooming and smelling. Well and I walked out in these joys stale already on the shelf 80-200\2.8 well and that the photos were as always 16 pieces on previews, finished with flowers from the cell phone.

A few years ago there was a news about opening a koto-cafe in Japan, then they opened a lot of places and suddenly I found one in Auckland. As it turned out, you had to book cat socializing in advance, but I got lucky and had a free spot from 3 to 4. To keep the cats from freaking out, they don't let more than 16 people in an hour. For $15, you'll be treated to delicious coffee and cats. It's better to keep your coffee to yourself, because there are junkies there who will finish everything you left unattended.

It was decided to celebrate Christmas with a cycling trip through the remote areas of Auckland, specifically Waiheke Island, which is quite popular among tourists. Most visitors are interested in the vineyards and wine restaurants, but we planned to ride along the beaches, hit an MTB trail, and eventually stop at a vineyard for some food and drinks. Since I live 10 kilometers from the ferry departure point, I set off as early as 7 AM… The roads were completely empty 🙂. Instead of the 50 minutes Google estimated, I made it in 35 without even breaking a sweat. Then came an "unexpected" issue with the ferry—we didn’t get a spot on the one heading to Waiheke. The next ferry was in two hours, but the port authorities quickly redirected everyone to Auckland’s main port on a different ferry, completely free of charge. From Auckland, ferries to Waiheke run every 30 minutes. They didn’t ask for any extra payment, and they even let us board before the Auckland passengers! 🙂

We have here on the eve of 2016 weather forecast decided to break all records and on January 1, 2016 promised 3 MONTHLY norms of precipitation. Happily rainy «happiness» moved from midnight to 6 a.m. and although I didn't go into town for the fireworks, I shot some of it from the veranda of the house I live in on North Shore. From the photos, you can estimate the roughness at 200mm from a distance of 10km at a shutter speed of 1 second.

Being a programmer by profession and an optimizer by nature, my inner calculator thought and decided that going to bed for 2-3 hours before a flight is not cool and then paying for a cab is not cool either. So an alternative option was devised: take the last bus into town and hang around for two or three hours. The idea was realized, with a few photos emerging in the process.

Collected a lot of photos from various treks around the city. The weather is great, despite the climactic winter, you have to slather on the sunscreen so you don't get an overdose of UV. There were no particularly heavy rains, as a rule the rain ends in 20-30 minutes... but then it starts again for 20-30 minutes 🙂 Anyway, it's fun here.

We're in the middle of a biological event! The Corpse Flower has bloomed in Auckland 🙂 Not that it does this rarely, but the last time it bloomed was in 2013. On the outside, this «flower» over three meters tall. I didn't get to the fragrant blooming period, so I can't tell you anything about the smell, but people who went to smell it say it doesn't stink much. Also in the post threw flower photos made in June-July this year (we have such a winter in the southern hemisphere). Since I don't know what all of them are called, the captions will just be numbers.

Back in early April during the big Easter vacation, I traveled to Gisbon to deliver a long-promised gift from Russia. As entertainment on the second day we went to the hot springs of Morere, where besides the springs there are several trails in the wildest New Zealand forest, of varying degrees of difficulty, with a climb of about 280 meters.

It's all on my phone, but I did my best, and there are some cool shots in there. 🙂 At the same time I tested MapMyWalk - a program that writes a track when you walk, but most importantly it shows the tracks of other walkers, and you can choose someone else's route and follow it. Very handy in unfamiliar terrain.

I went to the zoo to see the wonderful Kiwi bird and everyone else who would be there. In the end, I saw everyone, but not the Kiwi. In the enclosure where they live, an artificial night is created, and you can't see anything at all! The entrance ticket to the zoo costs $29, and for $85, you can become a special zoo lover and visit places inaccessible to ordinary people, like petting lemurs or feeding kangaroos. I would like to specifically mention the navigation in the zoo, which is just obscenely confusing. There are no signs on the territory at all, and I made three circles around the baboons before finding the passage to the Kiwi. At the entrance, everyone is given a map, but the map is schematic and does not reflect the actual distances and locations of the sections. Nothing is clear! But the map does have a schedule of when different animals are fed on which days, and you can watch shows all day.

Le Roys Bush, is a fairly well-known piece of nature in the northern part of Auckland. Known primarily for the difference in elevation from sea level to… I don't know how far it says to the highest point on Norhshore. 🙂 Historically, the trails in this forest were used by Maori to bring sea fishing products to their villages. Now these impenetrable thickets are used for walking, extreme running with high altitude gradients, well for wildlife watching.

In one of the days of fall, I went on a walking tour of Petropavlovsk, to see what live on the outskirts of the city. And the sniff didn't let me down, a full flash drive of impressions, thrash, gore and shards of the Soviet past. Walked no more or less than 20km, reached the big water, had some plushies and took the bus back home, where the subs were waiting for me at sunset…

Many amazing and unusual things can be found in Kamchatka. For example, you can catch flounder in the very center of the city, 500 meters from the government of Kamchatka Krai. You can climb a sopka and along the way learn that in 1854, Kamchatka could have been part of England… but ours defended it. You can ride your bike to the ocean and ride into an unknown military antenna of about 1,000 square meters… about «eating the flounder you caught on a fishing rod» I have no words. 🙂

Boat trips in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky are one of the popular tourist attractions. Duration of walks is different, there are for 3 days with fishing, tents and other joys, there is with an exit to the ocean, there are short one-day walks along Avacha Bay. That's just the short one we were on. From the sights we were shown the famous rocks «Three Brothers», which, according to legend, protect the bay, and standing on its shore Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, from tsunamis, which often occur in the Pacific Ocean.

To be in Kamchatka, and not climb volcanoes - it's a shame shame shame and step march to fix! Especially since some jeep access is only open for 3-4 weeks in August, the rest of the time there is either snow or rivers-lakes from the melting of this snow. One of such volcanoes is the active volcano Mutnovsky, which last erupted relatively recently, in 2000. Now in the crater you can observe and smell high-temperature fumaroles (this is when steam from under the ground with a temperature of 150-300 degrees Celsius). In a word must see!

Ведомый любопытством и нюхом на хорошие кадры, сходил на Moscow City Games, которые в этот раз проходили в Лужниках. На входе как всегда полиция и металлоискатели. Хорошо хоть воду, купленную заранее не отбирали, хотя объявления подобные висели. В поисках роллерской рампы прошелся вокруг и поснимал, что там еще творилось.

Almost missed this epochal event! The first robo-rock band with a concert in Moscow. The band Compressorhead formed in 2007 by assembling four-armed drummer Stickboy from junk. 2 years later, he was joined by guitarist Fingers, who has 78 fingers. Somewhere around this time, little Stickboy Jr came crawling in to help the big one and open the hats in the right places in the songs. The guys were chopping ugary ROCK together until 2012 when they were overtaken by bassist Fingers, who already looks more like a human being than the rest of the band. The guys appeared on the big stage as a warm-up act for the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 2013.

Ever since the days of the ZX Spectrum I've had a big crush on demo-making, I even accumulated some and wrote a couple dozen tracks of music. Back then, in 1991-1994, we had no idea that there were some demo-parties and that people were competing there to see who could crack the code the best. But, a little later, when I had already moved to PC I was wildly eager to get to the demo party. We even organized local hangouts in Novosibirsk Crazy Syberian Party, but all that was not the same. We should have gotten to Assembly — the largest demoparty in the world, held annually in Finland. Well, here we are 🙂

The last day in Auckland started with torrential rain and hurricane force winds blowing cyclists out of the way. Thankfully, all the streets in the center are equipped with awnings and you can move around staying dry, but crossing the road was wet. Continuation of the 25 kilometer hike across Auckland. This part will be two of Auckland's most popular tourist hotspots: Mount Eden and One Tree Hill. Mount Eden is the crater of a once erupting volcano. It was a long time ago, about 28,000 years ago. And One Tree Hill is where the Maori lived before the Europeans arrived. The original tree was cut down back in 1870 by some white asshole. Later, John Campbell tried to re-grow the tree, but to grow the same tree of the species [totara] failed. Eventually two pine trees took root at the summit, but these too were cut down once again by the Maori in 1960 for being a foreign, non-sacred tree. Now there is an obelisk to John Kembel at the summit, and the mountain is popularly known as None Tree Hill 🙂

Auckland is New Zealand's largest city and it is more like our, European, idea of cities than any other. For those who are not afraid to walk a lot through the city there is a route through the most important tourist places of Auckland - Mount Eden, Auckland Domain, Memorial Museum, One Tree Hill. The route is 16km long, but I got over 20. I left at 9am and got back to the hotel by bus at 6pm.

October 11th, I had to test the efficiency of New Zealand's transportation systems. From Christchurch to Picton by bus, then from Picton to Wellington by ferry, and from Wellington to Auckland by plane. I had bought the tickets in advance, but if someone was delayed by just an hour, the whole plan would fall apart... I didn't want that to happen. The morning turned out to be wonderful. I woke up at 6:00, had breakfast, and was at the bus stop by 6:45, where I still had to go through a simple registration for the flight and exchange my electronic ticket for a regular one. When I entered the office, I saw two women, one of whom was a pure-blooded Maori. I handed her the papers, and she suddenly asked me in perfect Russian, 'Shevchenko?' I didn't even have time to react, and she added, 'Russian?' I was completely amazed 🙂. Then she continued in English, saying that her husband is Russian 🙂. At that moment, the second woman in the office woke up and exclaimed, 'YOU HAVE A RUSSIAN HUSBAND O_O?!' In general, the morning turned out to be positive for everyone 🙂.

Christchurch is the oldest city in New Zealand. It officially received the status of a city in 1856. The town has preserved buildings from those times, many century-old trees, species unknown to me, growing for hundreds of years. In 2010 and 2011 Christchurch was hit hard by earthquakes and most of the historic buildings were destroyed. Now the city is just beginning to climb out of this disaster. It is noteworthy that one of the first buildings rebuilt after the earthquakes was the Art Gallery building.

After being in the hills of Picton for almost 5 hours, I was already strongly wishing I could sit for longer. And such pleasure was provided to me by a transportation company with the interesting name of Nakedbus. The name is so "borderline foul" that one US hosting provider abruptly banned me by IP just for trying to write that word on a New Zealand forum 🙂

So, uh. ahead of me was to enjoy the views of New Zealand from the windows of a naked bus for 6 hours. I can tolerate such long sit-ups easily enough, so I wasn't even worried. In fact, it turned out that on the way the views were so enchanting that I forgot to realize that it was practically pointless to take photos from the bus window, and shot the whole way without stopping. In 6 hours about 180 frames were accumulated, of which 30 and a penny were more or less suitable for publication.

The next day thoroughly fueled by muesli and toast with jam at the Sequoia Backpackers hostel I rolled out the sun, dispersed the clouds and went to photograph Picton again. I had four hours before the bus to Chöch. Picton is home to a very large hub of hiking trails, they all start here. I googled a trail to Waikawa Bay from which you can turn back to Picton at about the halfway point.

The first rain during my stay in Wellington was on the day I sailed to Picton, before which it had been sunny and rain-free all week. The process of boarding the ferry is similar to that of an airplane, only the luggage is not screened, and so everything is like the big iron birds - check-in, waiting in another hall and passing through the teletrap. The most exciting thing for me was that I was going traveling alone, and, as it turned out, with virtually no knowledge of English. Sure I could buy food and knew what to yell once I was overboard, but 99% of what was said to me I didn't understand a damn thing 🙁

Makara Beach is located 20 kilometers from Wellington. It is one of the windiest places in New Zealand. The coastal cliffs rise over 100 meters above the sea, giving a good view of the Tasman Sea. This point is very convenient for building defensive structures, which were erected there during World War II. There are no cannons there now, only concrete fortifications remain. The 6km walking route passes through a wind farm, but we didn't get there due to lack of preparation… Simply put, without food and water it is better not to go there on foot, despite «only 6 kilometers»

When I landed in Wellington on Saturday evening, I had already crossed nine time zones heading east. Usually, people take three days to a week to recover from such a jet lag. But as a long-time reader of Exler, I knew about the magical pills — Melaxen — that help the body adjust to drastic time zone shifts. I decided to give them a try. The effect was incredible! The next morning, I woke up at 8 AM feeling like I hadn’t traveled at all. Great stuff; highly recommend!

On September 27, I barely made it to 5:00 p.m. at work because all my thoughts were on what was coming up. I spent the next almost 2 days in the sky and in airports, on my way to the other side of the earth - New Zealand. 17,000 kilometers, 36 hours, including 22 hours in the sky… Yeah baby! Jubilant was my pent-up curiosity! And so it flew…

In short, what was this all about... As I understood, it was theatrical improvisation, where the director sets a theme, an actor strikes a pose according to the theme, the second actor reacts to what the first one did with their own move, the third… and so on. There were five of them in total 🙂

For the third time the festival of modern Japanese culture J-Fest was held in Moscow. At the festival, spectators who are not indifferent to anime culture made cosplay. "How does that work?" is usually what people asked me when I invited friends to an evening of charitable striptease. Well, here's how: guests would arrive and bring large bags of warm clothes, hand them over to the organizers, and then proceed to the hall, where, with a drink (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) and some Parmesan or fruits, they watched as the charming girls from the show project "Pudra" first put on and then gracefully removed the clothes that had been brought. The clothes were collected for the charity fund "Fair Help," led by Elizaveta Glinka. You can see how it all went down in the photos.

Summer Adrenalin Games 2011 Moscow

The Summer Adrenalin Games 2011 took place in Moscow on August 13 and 14 in Gorky Park under the scorching sun. The main disciplines were BMX Air, BMX Dirt, Mountainbike, and Skateboarding. Many international riders came to participate in these championships. In addition to the main program on the huge skatepark built specifically for these competitions, there were smaller fan zones where equally interesting gatherings took place. Beatboxers were spotted (though it's useless to photograph them 🙂), BMX Flatland, Footbag, Style Jump on rollerblades, breakdancing, and possibly something else I missed... On July 23, 2011, the eighth Afisha Picnic took place in Kolomenskoye. Under the open sky, amidst nature and music flowing from four stages, tens of thousands of Muscovites and visitors to the capital relaxed and soaked up the sun. Numerous bands of various styles and genres performed. The headliner was Courtney Love, and Zemfira, whose fans had long yearned for her music and live performances, closed the festival on the main stage. Here’s a small photo set for your attention.

On July 9, 2011, the first International Tsar Jazz Festival took place, featuring global jazz stars performing alongside Georgy Garanian's orchestra. I was most eager to see and hear the legendary Benny Golson, who played in the 1950s with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Now 82 years old, he still performs hour-long concerts—simply incredible!

I didn’t take many photos because, as a friend of mine once said: “Never bring a camera to a concert! Either you’ll leave without photos, or you won’t even remember what they played.” Aside from Golson, I thoroughly enjoyed the performances of Mary McBride and the New York Voices quartet. But the highlight came at the end, when it started raining, and the musicians launched into a final improvisation! The crowd stood in the rain and danced. One man, in particular, danced with such energy… I truly indulged in photographing him. 🙂

12 июня в день празднования Дня России на Поклонной горе состоялся open-air Metro On Stage. Выступали молодые группы Москвы и гости из Минска, Челябинска и Финляндии. Играли в основном инди-рок и альтернативу. Мне больше понравились «два Океана» — это группа Andy Ocean, и группа Ocean Waves. Ну и особым вниманием зрителей конечно была одарена группа Душа Питера из Финляндии исполнявшая песни на русском языке! Душа Питера запомнится еще и неожиданной акцией по распространению резиновых изделий со своей символикой 🙂

On June 5 on Sretensky Boulevard, near the Krupskaya Monument, the open project "**Estamos en Movimiento**" organized a master class in Latin dances merenguero (merengue) and bachata (bachata). A bonus was a faculty demonstration and a macarena lesson. Everyone was given free chocolates from sponsors and even raffled off a t-shirt. Waves of positivity dissolved in the rays of the setting sun to the rhythms of Latin American melodies.

Because of the traffic collapse at the entrance to this year I was late by 2 hours, as a result I took few pictures, but listened to the performance of those who wanted — is Zhenya Lubich and the Billy’s Band. The festival itself is, as always, extraordinarily positive and colorful. Lots of people with kids from 0 to 70. 🙂 The kids were entertained with all sorts of creative contests, eating sweets and other antics. Adults were entertained by 5 music venues with a variety of music. The Parterre was crowded as always especially during the Billy’s Band performance. On May 27, 2011 the second championship on playing these nostalgia generators was held in the museum of Soviet slot machines. There are new automatons Skorokhod, Pilot, Python. Most of the old ones have been restored and are functional. As many as 3 Torpedo Attack machines, two of which are for doubles play. As always, the greatest outburst of emotions caused battles in Hockey, Basketball, and Football. The sponsors this time made us happy and provided many different cool prizes for the winners, and all the participants got free Zhiguli beer in unlimited quantities! Let's see how it was.

On May 21 and 22 in Moscow in the Yabloneviy Art Garden was held festival PROspaces 2011. The program of the festival was made up of open-air performances of various musicians playing music of intricate directions: Hippie dub, abstract fusion, ethno type-hop… and a lot of other scary words. But it was actually very melodic and caressing to the ear. In addition to the musicians, there were a lot of things to see — a bunch of lectures on tourism and travel, freemarket, exhibitions, handmade jewelry and musical instruments... two May days of music, creativity, kindness and understanding on the grounds of the Apple Tree Art Garden.

Photos from the ceremonial burning of the largest effigy of Maslenitsa, which took place on March 6, 2011 in the Istrinskaya Valley as part of the holiday "Shirokaya Maslenitsa 2011". Before burning, the effigy was carefully measured in height and width to get into some record book. And it was great! I suggest we see how it was...

Robots against us! So said the poster, near which young and not so young people were stacking up. You bet, nostalgia, for slot machines in those born in the 70-80 years, flows in the blood. All shot with the Tokina 50-135/2.8 at different focal lengths and almost always 2.8. The lens was someone else's, I didn't have time to get used to it, often missed focus, autofocus is not fast even on Nikon D200.

Photographing such action is quite dangerous, not so much for the photographer as for the equipment. A drop of this liquid, even in its unburned state, flies into the lens at such a speed that it easily penetrates under the rubbers and seeps into the gaps between the rotating elements. But the effect produced by an artist juggling live fire is impossible to describe!

Вид на Голден Файв со стороны дороги. Как раз за деревом с желтыми цветочками располагается въезд на территорию отеля, выполненный в виде пирамиды. Справа от птичек видно отель Сапфир (Sapphire) и множество магазинчиков с сувенирами.

Отель Club расположен на территории комплекса Golden Five City в Египте, рядом с городом Хургада. Жилые комнаты расположены в двухэтажных домиках замысловатой формы. Все домики представляют собой некий лабиринт, в середине которого находится бассейн. Первый раз оказавшись в этих коридорах легко заблудиться, но посмотрите какая красота!
